Testing
Find the right sperm test.
A sperm test can be a clinic semen analysis, a postal lab kit, a home device or a concentration strip. Compare what each measures, and the prices checked on the provider's own site.

Short answer
It depends on the question. A clinic or laboratory semen analysis is the full assessment NICE compares with WHO reference values. A mail-in test sends a sample to a lab. A home device looks at a few measurements in minutes. A cheap strip only says whether concentration is above a cut-off. They are not interchangeable, and a reassuring home result does not close the question if you have been trying to conceive.
Four kinds of test
- 01 Strip
- A yes/no on concentration. Minutes, at home.
- 02 Device
- A few measurements on a phone or reader. Still not a WHO analysis.
- 03 Postal lab
- You produce the sample at home. A laboratory reports it.
- 04 Clinic
- The reference test. Produced for the laboratory, read against WHO limits.

Key takeaways
- Clinic analysis, mail-in analysis and instant home testing are not interchangeable.
- Where we've checked a provider's own page, the price and the measurements are shown. Where we haven't, we leave them out.
- SemenBoost doesn't have an approved affiliate relationship with any test.
- If you need testing in a particular city, start with the UK or US page and the London comparison.
Which type of sperm test is right for you?
- Laboratory semen analysis, produced for a clinic or andrology lab and examined with a full method.
- Mail-in analysis, where a sample is posted to a laboratory. The journey can affect motility.
- Instant home analysis, often a device or a phone video of moving sperm.
- Threshold tests that only indicate whether concentration is above or below a cut-off.
The table above uses only pages we checked on 5 October 2026. ExSeed lists £94.99 for two home tests. YO lists $99.95 for a three-test home kit. SpermCheck lists $49 for a fertility strip that does not measure motility, shape or volume. Jack Fertility describes a postal laboratory test and does not publish a price we could verify. Legacy describes a US mail-in analysis and cryopreservation service. Its homepage says freezing starts at $245 a year, which is a storage figure, not the price of the analysis.
How to choose
If you and a partner have been trying for the interval your health service uses, or a clinician has asked for a semen analysis, book the laboratory test. If you want a private look at count and motility before that appointment, a device such as ExSeed or YO is a different product from a strip that only sorts concentration. If you are about to start testosterone treatment, cancer treatment or a vasectomy, read sperm freezing as well as this page. A home test does not replace that conversation.
Can a GP do a sperm test?
In the UK, a GP does not usually examine the sample. The NHS route is to speak to a GP, who can arrange a semen analysis at a laboratory. That is a different test from a strip bought online. Testing in the UK explains the route, and London is the city comparison we have been able to publish.
Care routes
Testing sits inside a health system. Use male fertility testing in the UK or in the US, and the matching semen-analysis pages, for what is actually different. The cost page explains why there is no average price.
Questions
Can my GP do a sperm test?
A GP does not usually analyse the sample. In the NHS, you speak to a GP and they arrange a semen analysis at a laboratory. That is a fuller test than a home strip.
Is a home sperm test as good as a semen analysis?
No. A home device or strip measures less than a WHO laboratory semen analysis. NICE says the reference ranges apply to the WHO tests. A home result can be a starting point. It is not the assessment a clinic uses when a couple has been trying.
